Many women suffer from neck and back pain from having heavy breasts. Macromastia (“large breasts”) can have a significant impact on a woman’s quality of life. Here is a recent question answered by Sydney Plastic Surgeon, Dr Damian Marucci, on the breast.com.au forum.
I have wanted a reduction for many years. I am almost 50 and i have had 3 children. I have always had large breasts and they developed early when i was younger they were embarrassing. when i lose weight i never lose any from my cup size. At the moment i need to relose around 20kg to get back to my ideal weight i was 4 years ago. I have constant back and neck pain and as i was in a car accident at 11 years old and got whiplash – the excess weight of my breasts aggrevates this and gives me savage headaches. I also have big indentations in my shoulders. I have always worn properly fitting bras amd believe me as a young teen it was horrible because the were ugly. I know it is best for me to lose weight. But knowing i dont have the money to pay for a reduction depresses me and gives me no motivation. I am a 16E
Dr Marucci’s reply was:
I am sorry to hear of the troubles you’ve been having.
The symptoms you describe – the back pain, shoulder indentations, embarrassment regarding the size of your breasts – are common to patients seeking breast reduction. Breast reduction surgery can safely and effectively address all of these issues – for that reason it is one of the most popular procedures plastic surgeons perform.
Losing weight prior to surgery is important. It lowers the risk of the anaesthetic. Also your breast size and shape changes with your weight, so if you can reach an ideal stable weight, the results of your surgery are more likely to be long lasting.
That said, some patients find themselves in the situation where they can’t exercise because of their heavy breasts. In these cases, a breast reduction sooner rather than later may the right option, even though there may be a further change in breast shape when your lose further weight. In a (very) few public hospitals, breast reduction surgery is offered, although the waiting time can be significant. If you can afford private health insurance, it would certainly make things easier for you.
