Eyelid Surgery in Sydney
Your eyes and the area around your eyes are an essential part of your facial beauty. Your eyes, eyelids and eyebrows convey emotion, arousal and truly are a window on your soul. A beautiful face is one with soulful and expressive eyes.
When it comes to ageing, unfortunately gravity always wins. It is common for people to develop heavy eyebrows and extra skin and fat on both the upper and lower eyelids. Problems can develop with upper eyelid “hooding,” which can cause the skin to spill over the upper lash line and obstruct vision. Lower eyelid fullness tends to lead to the development of lower eyelid “bags” and a “tear trough” deformity at the junction of the lower eyelid and cheek.
Luckily, all of these problems can be corrected to turn the clock back on facial ageing. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery in Sydney with A/Prof Damian Marucci can minimise signs of ageing in the upper lids, lower lids or both.
What Does Eyelid Surgery Involve?
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is an important component of facial rejuvenation. Often, eyelid procedures are combined with a facelift or brow lift to revitalize and define the face. The procedures can be performed during the same operation or spaced out separately. Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and patients are able to go home the same day.
Upper eyelid surgery is called an “upper blepharoplasty.” An upper blepharoplasty involves removing extra skin and fat from the upper eyelids in order to address the upper eyelid “hooding.” Our Sydney eyelid surgeon usually creates the incisions in the natural creases of the upper eyelid, so scarring is not noticeable.
Lower eyelid surgery (“lower blepharoplasty”) is a little more complicated. It usually involves redistributing the fat of the lower eyelid in order to smooth the transition between the lower eyelid and upper cheek. Sometimes a bit of fat needs to be removed, but it’s important not to overdo the fat removal; otherwise a “hollowed out” look can occur. Surgery on the lower eyelids usually involves removing a small amount of skin just below the eyelashes, as well as “tightening” the lower eyelid. This lower eyelid tightening not only improves the overall shape of the lower eyelid, it also prevents the position of the lower eyelid being dragged down by scar tissue. The incisions for lower blepharoplasty are typically created below the lower lash line or on the inside of the eye.
Recovering from Eyelid Surgery
Recovery after eyelid surgery involves bruising and swelling around the eyes which lasts a week or two. Patients should refrain from strenuous activity or exercise for the first few weeks after surgery. The sutures are removed at one week and patients are normally back to work and the rest of their regular activities after 2 to 3 weeks.
