For some women, the breasts can be an area of the body that makes them feel self conscious and uncomfortable. Undersized, droopy, or uneven breasts can erode confidence and self-esteem. A/Prof Damian Marucci has assisted many women with these issues through breast augmentation surgery.
What is breast augmentation?
Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?
If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or symmetry of your breasts, breast augmentation may be right for you. Ideal candidates will be healthy nonsmokers with clear expectations for the procedure.
Breast augmentation can also be performed combined with breast lifting surery or following breast cancer surgery. Restoring the breasts can greatly improve a cancer patient’s confidence and ability to mentally handle their situation.
What options are available for implants?
Breast implants come in a number of options to provide women of all sizes with the results they desire. Implants come in round or teardrop shape with a textured or non-textured surface. Generally, implants containing cohesive silicone gel are used. The amount of material that is placed into the implant determines the cup size and fullness of the breast and should be selected to create a natural appearance.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Patients will be administered general anaesthesia before the procedure begins. The incision site varies by patient depending on their individual needs and will be discussed during the consultation. Incisions can occur under the breast (inframammary), under the armpit (transaxillary), or around the areola (pariareolar). The incision is made to insert the implant either under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision site, which generally fades to a dim white line over time.
What is the recovery process like?
Some swelling and bruising is expected, but will subside over time. Dr. Marucci will provide any necessary pain medicine and care instructions. All patients are instructed to wear an underwire-free sports bra home following the procedure and for the next few weeks to provide compression and support. Showering is acceptable the following day, but exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Patients are generally able to return to their routine activities after one week, but should be careful not to overexert themselves.
